Ford faces the end of its commercialization in Germany and the destruction of its cars. The reason: 4G

Internet connection has become essential in new vehicles. Both due to the demands of drivers and those of the current and future European institutions. A context that has led to an increase in mobile networks and that can drive Ford out of the German market.

destroy yourselves. A German court has ruled against ford in relation to the use it makes of eight patents for telephony and LTE (4G) networks. In his sentence, which is still appealable, Ford is forced to stop selling and producing all the cars that make use of these networks and even destroy those that are already in dealerships.

The lawsuit has been filed by IPBridge, a company that defends the interests of up to eight companies that have violated patents in their portfolio. However, the Munich regional court that has estimated Ford’s wrongdoing also forces IP Bridge to pay a bail of 227 million euros so that the sentence can be executed. Reuters collects that Ford has not issued a statement positioning itself and that they are waiting for news.

LTE networks. The use of LTE networks is increasingly widespread among vehicles. In addition to the obligations required by the European Union, such as the e-Call communication system for emergency calls in the event of an accident, navigation systems and connected services make intensive use of patents related to wireless communications.

And the use of these networks will only increase in the future. Europe is in the process of reducing road accidents and a large part of the success lies in connectivity between vehicles. The DGT 3.0 is based on this, not to mention autonomous driving, with real-time warnings of accidents on the road, works, weather problems and alternative routes. For years, the European Union has debated the use of 4G and 5G networks or, on the contrary, Wi-Fi for communication protocols between cars in the future.

Recurrent. This is not the first time that IP Bridge has gone against a vehicle manufacturer in dispute over the use of patents for wireless communications. This Japanese company also appeared against volkswagen this same year and also in Germany.

On that occasion they claimed that Volkswagen only had a license to exploit the 4G network in its luxury or Premium firms (Lamborghini, Porsche and Audi) and that the rest of the brands acted under the 3G standard. Once obsolete, they were taking advantage of LTE or 4G communication systems without paying for such patents. On that occasion, the manufacturer reached an agreement with Advancea company under whose umbrella are the IP Bridge patents.

What is 5G and how is it different from 4G?

In addition, Germany has become the preferred country for the plaintiffs to carry out these legal actions. The country has strict patent control laws. In fact, Google Maps Y microsoft were in the spotlight in 2013 and Apple had to temporarily withdraw their iPhone 7 and 8 as a result of another legal process.
