DJI just introduced the DJI Avatar, a small drone weighing 410 grams focused on flexibility and immersive first-person flights. To do this, DJI is not launching one but two products today, because the Avata is accompanied by glasses DJI Goggles 2 that we can use to fly in the first person driving the drone with the movement controller that DJI already markets for the DJI FPV, which we have already been able to test.

From the company they advertise the DJI Avata more like a drone to enjoy flights in places that pose a challenge to those who carry it, such as complicated places in nature or indoors. There is increasing demand for the kind of dizzying video that these drones manage to record.

To record, it has a sensor 1/1.7-inch 48-megapixel CMOS and a wide-angle lens with a field of view of up to 155 degrees with a fixed aperture of f/2.8. With this, it is capable of capturing 4K video at 60 fps and slow-motion video in 2.7K at 100 fps with the Goggles 2 and at 120 fps with the GVP Goggles V2, which are the glasses that DJI already marketed. All this, with a maximum bitrate of 150 Mbps.

A drone for (more) strong emotions indoors and outdoors

DJI says they’ve stripped down the drone’s chassis as much as possible from that of a traditional drone to be effective for speed and agility, without losing guards on the propellers for safety. Thus, they claim that able to withstand light collisions or get up in turtle mode if it lands face up. There is no lack of functions such as the return to the origin point at the touch of a button, as well as that of the emergency brake and hover.

In the cameras, the DJI avata has the mentioned sensor (which is not bigger than the one in the DJI mini 3 Pro, for example), stabilized with its dedicated technologies, DJI RockSteadyto eliminate image shaking and DJI HorizonSteadywhich keeps the image correctly oriented.

Although it is a drone of strong emotions, safety is key when flying, and the Avata includes GPS and DJI’s AirSense ADS-B system to alert the drone pilot when airplanes or helicopters are nearby. It also has a mode that helps authorities detect it if we fly it through sensitive locations.

I am a professional drone pilot and my job has nothing to do with flying a drone "toy"

To store video, this model It has an internal memory of 20 GBaccording to DJI to promote spontaneity when you don’t have the card, since the drone continues to incorporate a slot for microSD up to 256 GB.

The maximum flight time is 18 minutes per charge thanks to its 2,420 mAh battery, while the Googles 2 have a range of two hours.

The DJI Avata has these three modes:

  • normal mode: Here it maintains a hover with the use of satellite navigation and/or visual positioning systems in the lower part of the aircraft. Allows you to fly at 8 meters per second.
  • Manual mode: It is only available with the DJI FPV Remote Controller 2. It is a mode that gives much more control of movement and is more customizable. Allows you to fly at 14 meters per second.
  • Sports mode: It is a mix between the previous two, for those who want some of the freedom of Manual Mode but with some security features of Normal Mode. It is focused on familiarizing yourself with safety, although for this DJI also has a simulation application. Allows you to fly at 27 meters per second.

DJI Goggles 2, Avata’s travel companions

Goggles 2

The Avata will work with the new DJI Goggles 2 glasses. They weigh 290 grams and have a micro-OLED screen, and allow to follow the movement with good sharpness and low latency. In addition, it has adjustable diopters so that it is not necessary to wear prescription glasses or contact lenses.

According to DJI, they connect to the drone using the DJI O3+ transmission. So he is able to provide 1080p video at 100 fps with H.265 codec. The latency is approximately 30 milliseconds with a range of 10 kilometers, with a bit rate of 50 Mbps. In addition to what we can see with them, we can also retransmit to a computer, mobile or tablet so that other people can also follow the flight .
