evo panels expand and OLED reaches 42 ”

  • 44

The Spanish subsidiary of LG already allows us to book in your online store good part of the televisions that it offers us this year, which unambiguously reflects that they are about to land in stores. The bet of this brand by OLED technology It has been very strong for a decade now (its first large-format organic panel was presented in 2012), but this year this strategy is going to reach its peak.

And it is that, as we told you at the beginning of last January during the celebration of the last edition of CES, in 2022 this company is going to deploy the portfolio of OLED TVs most ambitious that he has proposed to us so far. And his recipe for this year is being cooked with two very promising ingredients.

One of them is that the panels Third generation OLED evo they are present in more series than last year. And the other first is that, for the first time, we can get a 42-inch OLED television. There is no doubt that the reason why LG has decided to develop smaller organic panels is none other than to allow more people to access their OLED televisions. And it is good news.

What is special about the OLED evo panels of the Z2, G2 and C2 series

Last year only the LG G1 series mounted the third generation OLED evo panels, but, as expected, this year these panels they will reach more families in their portfolio. The lucky ones are the Z2 series, the highest range of this brand; the G2, which is the one that offers us televisions specially designed to be hung on the wall; and, finally, the C2, which is, without a doubt, the most popular of all (and the one that seems more balanced to us year after year).

According to LG, their evo arrays are 20% more efficient than panels with 2nd generation organic diodes. This feature not only affects consumption, which is somewhat lower in the new panels; It has also allowed LG engineers to act on its brightness delivery capacity, which is now, according to this brand, 30% higher. On paper, this quality should allow televisions with an OLED evo panel to perform better with HDR content.

How to calibrate your screen or monitor: an in-depth guide

The televisions of the G2 and C2 families will be able to deliver maximum brightness peaks in limited areas of the panel surface of 1000 and 900 nits respectively

In fact, apparently the televisions of the G2 and C2 families will be able to deliver maximum brightness peaks in limited areas of the panel surface. 1000 and 900 nits respectively. However, part of the responsibility for this light delivery capacity lies with the Brightness Booster Max technologies, integrated in the G2 series, and Brightness Booster, implemented in the C2 family. Its purpose, broadly speaking, is precisely to take advantage of the greater room for maneuver in the context of the efficiency and durability of third-generation OLED panels.

However, this is not all. LG technical managers have confirmed that the modifications they have introduced in the structure of the evo panel (we will investigate them in the next paragraph) allow it to reproduce the color with more precision and increase its durability, making it less sensitive to image retention than second generation OLED panels.

To increase the accuracy with which evo-panel OLED TVs reproduce color, LG engineers they have modified the structure of the panel, acting on the layers that are responsible for the restitution of the red and blue colors. In addition, they have added a new layer to restore the green color that, according to this brand, has a perceptible impact on the light delivery capacity of the television.

In any case, the G2 and C2 families do not only share their OLED evo panel with 4K UHD resolution; they also use the same image processor, a chip 4K Alpha 9 Gen 5 with AI; They offer us HDMI 2.1 connectivity in the four ports; implement Wi-Fi 6; and, finally, they are compatible with NVIDIA G-SYNC and AMD FreeSync adaptive refresh technologies, among other features that seek to attract video game enthusiasts (you can consult them all in the table).

LG OLED evo G2.

On the other hand, the televisions that make up the OLED evo Z2 series opt for an organic panel with 8K resolution, so its image processor 8K Alpha 9 Gen 5 it is more powerful than the one integrated in the G2 and C2 families. Of course, it shares with the latter the complete implementation of the 2.1 standard in the four HDMI connectors, Wi-Fi 6 connectivity and the commitment to the WebOS 22 operating system.

Z2, G2 and C2 series TVs offer us full HDMI 2.1 connectivity on all four ports

Regarding the reproduction of HDR content, LG’s commitment is the same as in previous years, so these televisions can deal with Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10 and HLG content, but not with HDR10+ metadata.

We can also expect that the ambition with which these series solve the sound will be different. LG has not yet provided us with much information about the sound features of these televisions, but it is reasonable to expect that the most careful sound The Z2 series will propose it to usand the most ‘modest’, the C2, although this does not mean at all that the models of this last family are going to sound bad.

What can we expect from the OLED B2 and A2 models

These are the series from its portfolio of televisions with organic panels that LG proposes to users who have a moderate budget, or who simply do not need to invest more money to access the additional features of the C2 or G2 families. Both series, the B2 and the A2, use a 4K UHD OLED panel, although the matrix of the first one works at 120 Hz, and that of the second at a more modest 60 Hz. Of course, from the video processing in the two handles the same chip: one processor 4K Alpha 7 Gen 5 designed to run artificial intelligence algorithms.

Only the B2 series offers us 2.1 connectivity in two of its four HDMI ports. The three HDMI connectors of the A2 family implement the 2.0b standard

They also share the same HDR content support (Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10 and HLG) and Wi-Fi 5 wireless connectivity (they don’t offer us Wi-Fi 6, like the higher series). And, of course, both families bet on WebOS 22. However, only the B2 series it offers us 2.1 connectivity on two of its four HDMI ports. The three HDMI connectors of the A2 family implement the 2.0b standard, so if we want to use our TV with a new generation PC or console and our budget allows it, it is preferable to aspire to the B2 series, or to one of the superiors.
