'Elden Ring' hides a lot of references and tributes to other titles: from 'Game of Thrones' to 'Berserk'

Since he was involved in the production of the game, Hidetaka Miyazaki had already anticipated that ‘Elden Ring’ would be full of references and Easter eggs. A promise that surprised no one: it is common for their titles to refer to each other, although they are not part of a coherent universe. But with ‘Elden Ring’ unexpected winks (or not so much) to many other works with which FromSoftware’s latest game acknowledges its debts are coming to the fore. These are some of those winks.

Patches, from other FromSoftware games

The most obvious and expected of all the easter eggs in the game is the appearance of Patches. He is a character bent on tricking and killing the player who has been appearing in all the FromSoftware sagas in one way or another, suggesting that he is a kind of transdimensional creature: it was the Hyena in demon soulsthe spider in Bloodborne and Trusty/Unbreakable on Dark Souls.

The Moonlight Sword and other weapons from FromSoftware

In the already remote and archaic ‘King’s Field’ this weapon appeared, known as the Moonlight Sword, and it has been reappearing in FromSoftware games like ‘Dark Souls 3’. We will also see it in ‘Elden Ring’, as is the case with the Sovereign of Storms, another colossal sword that reappears in the company’s latest game.

‘Game of Thrones’

It was clear that some tribute to the creation of George RR Martin was going to fall into the game, considering that the author also collaborated on the script. Here the tribute is as spectacular as it is amazing: Miyazaki has turned the very Iron Throne, symbol of the saga and built with dozens of swords, in a single colossal sword multi-edged, called the Grafted Blade Greatsword. You have it at the head of this article. To get it you have to go to the extreme southern part of Necrolimbo, at the end of Morne Castle. Our companions of Extra Life describe the exact route.

‘berserk’

Throughout the history of the ‘Souls’, tributes to Kentaro Miura’s manga have been falling, but after his death in 2021, fans expected direct quotes in ‘Elden Ring’. The result is the Greatsword, a sword that we have already seen in other FromSoftware games, but here it has been redesigned to even more closely resemble the Dragon Slayer, the mythical signature weapon of the manga’s protagonist, Guts. It is found in a chest in Caelid and requires 31 strength points to wield.

It’s not the only Berserk reference in the game: some characters in ‘Elden Ring’ bear a striking resemblance to others in Miura’s work. The Prisoner class, the werewolf Blaidd and the Winged Helm they are very similar in design to Griffits, Guts in the berserker armor, and Farnese.

‘blasphemous’

Finally, Enrique Colinet, one of the developers of the acclaimed Spanish video game ‘Blasphemous’ (which is not surprising that it is a Miyazaki favourite) detected a very remarkable resemblance between the sword carried by the protagonist of this indie and a weapon from ‘Elden Ring’ known, very explicitly, as the Blasphemous Blade. The bloody handle and the thorny blade are very clear references to the Spanish game.
