Before the work of Frank Hernbert was back on everyone’s lips thanks to the ambitious adaptation by Denis Villeneuve, ‘Dune’ had already conquered the category of total classic in another medium: video games. ‘Dune II’, back in 1992, was the game that laid the foundations for real-time strategyand subsequent classic titles such as ‘Age of Empires’, ‘Command & Conquer’ or ‘Warcraft’ owe much of their inspiration to him.

Now, Shiro Games publishes ‘Dune: Spice Wars’, a 4X real-time strategy game (that is to say, that it puts the accent on the construction and management of empires in the style of ‘Civilization’) set in the universe created by Herbert. In this video with gameplay we can see how Shiro has visualized the desert planet and how the management of troops and settlements will work. The game will arrive on Steam in Spring in Early Access format with the promise of subsequent updates that will add, among other things, multiplayer mode.

Multiple ways to conquer Arrakis

The video flies over various strategies, such as diplomacy, espionage and conquest by force, of course. We will also be able to see how two of the absolute icons of the franchise are visualized: the nightmarish Baron Vladimir Harkonnen and the giant sandworms that populate Arrakis. The player will be able to play both as part of the Atreides and within the Harkonnen house. ‘Spice Wars’ seems to take many elements from the books, such as the exploration of the planet by ornithopters or the sudden changes in weather.

Fifty years of Dune are nothing and we have fifty (one) reasons to remember it

It is not the only game that Funcom is developing, publisher of the game, based on the work of Herbert, since it also has an open world survival game and a multiplayer approach on its hands. This other title that will take us to Arrakis, but at ground level, will be released on both PC and consoles, although there is no scheduled date yet.
