It had leaked a few hours ago and Disney did not take long to make it official. As she had anticipated, Disney + is going to offer a cheaper subscription, at the cost of users seeing advertising. It will arrive first in the United States and the intention is to expand it internationally later.

According to the company, this new subscription will be available in the United States at the end of 2022 and will be taken to the rest of the world in 2023. The rest of the details, such as the release date or prices, have not been revealed.

A “basic element” to reach goals

Although it is true that Disney has not revealed the price of its new modality, it has slipped that It will be cheaper (obviously). The objective with this new modality is to achieve the long-term goal of having 230-260 million subscribers by FY24. Disney considers this new subscription as a “basic element” to achieve it.

That target is not exactly low. To put it in context, we can use the figures from Netflix, the greatest exponent of streaming content on demand in the West. According to the latest company data, Netflix have 222 million subscribers, so the goal of Disney + is clear: catch up. It should be noted that Disney+ closed 2021 with 130 million subscribers.

On the other hand, and as explained by Rita Ferro, President of Advertising for Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution, “since its launch, advertisers have been clamoring for the opportunity to be part of Disney + and not just because there is a growing demand for more inventory streaming”. It is not yet known who the advertisers will bebut in any case Disney is not new to this.

In the US, Disney also has Hulu and ESPN+. Hulu was one of the first services to opt for a cheaper subscription with advertising and ESPN+ does live broadcasts. Now, simply, “contextually relevant advertising” will be brought to Disney+.
