Disney studies launching an Amazon Prime-style subscription program with benefits, according to WSJ

The Walt Disney Company is one of the world’s largest entertainment conglomerates, and its latest idea could squeeze the most out of it. According to The Wall Street Journalthe American empire is considering launching a discounted subscription program and special benefits for its members, a kind of Amazon Prime.

The idea behind this possible movement is to make users consume more of the entertainment giant’s services, such as its video-on-demand platform, theme parks, hotels, and other products related to its franchises, which individually already generate millions of dollars for Mickey Mouse’s coffers.

Disney could launch a benefits program

The program would also allow Disney to collect information about the tastes and habits of your customers to develop improved sales strategies using its different business units, which range from fully digital services to physical attractions, such as its theme parks.

Disney Communications Director Kristina Schake confirmed to the WSJ that they are looking into a membership program, adding, “Technology gives us new ways to tailor and personalize the consumer experience so we can deliver entertainment, experiences and products that are more relevant to each of our guests”.

For now, however, the idea is in the early stages, so the guidelines for a possible launch are not yet known. There is also no certainty about whether the company is thinking of this benefit program exclusively for the United States, or on the contrary, considering a broader deployment in other markets.

Currently, Disney has D23, a fan access program that costs $99.99 per year and offers benefits such as the purchase of exclusive brand merchandise, a subscription to Disney twenty-three magazine and discounted tickets to D23 Expo. As we can see, it is a proposal aimed at the most staunch fans, rather than the general public.

According to the aforementioned American newspaper, Disney is working on a first step to link products and services from different business units. Disney + subscribers will be able to buy accessories related to the content they are watching by scanning an on-screen QR code that will link to the Shop Disney store.
