BlackBerry will have a film that will portray the rise and fall of the company (and it has already finished shooting)

Research in Motion used to be one of the most important players in the mobile phone industry. Their BlackBerry devices were coveted by those looking to stay permanently connected. Even in his best years he managed to conquer clients outside the executive orbit, reaching teenagers thanks to his BBM chat. The company, however, failed to resist the phenomena of the iPhone and Android (although it later adopted this operating system).

A group of Canadian and American producers have felt that this story should be told behind the lens of a camera. Thus, they have embarked on a film project that, precisely, seeks to portray the rise and fall of BlackBerry. In fact, the project is already quite advanced. Filming has already been completed in Canada, the company’s country of origin, although there is still work to be done and it has not been specified when it could be released.

BlackBerry movie on the way

According to TechCrunch, the film will be titled ‘BlackBerry’ and is based on the book ‘Losing the Signal: The Spectacular Rise and Fall of BlackBerry’. It is a literary work released in 2015 and written by Canadian journalists Sean Silcoff and Jacquie McNish. The film will star Glenn Howerton (‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’) in the role of former RIM CEO Jim Balsillie. Jay Baruchel (“This Is the End”) will play the company’s co-founder, Mike Lazaridis.

It remains to be seen how much of the story will be included in the film. The book on which it is based was published in 2015, when the company had just launched its first Android phone, the BlackBerry Priv, although by then it was already in the doldrums. Other interesting moves followed, such as TCL’s manufacturing of branded devices in 2019 and OnwardMobility’s unsuccessful attempts to revive hardware keyboards.

My 2009 BlackBerry has become a paperweight because time is unforgiving

The truth is that BlackBerry is still alive, not as a manufacturer of mobile phones. Currently, the firm has redesigned its business scheme and is dedicated to offering cybersecurity and Internet of Things solutions (IoT, for its acronym in English), a destination that in its best years, possibly no one would have imagined. For now, it remains to wait to know when the film will be released and to know what part of the story they will tell us.
