With the last gasps of ‘Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’ still kicking (its latest DLC, ‘The Last Chapter’, was also released today), UbiSoft knew that the new and long-awaited installment of the franchise could not be just another game, since which marks the fifteenth anniversary of the start of the series. And so it has been: in an event that has revealed details about the future of the franchise, UbiSoft has given more clues about the plot and setting of the new ‘Assassin’s Creed Mirage’which is a tribute to the early days of the franchise.

We are going to review what these novelties are by points. Beware, there is not only ‘Mirage’, but a complete preview of what awaits the franchise in the coming (many) months. This is the future of ‘Assassin’s Creed’.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage

Three keys stood out in UbiSoft for this new approach to the saga that returns to the roots of it: it is a delivery absolutely driven by the narrative and both the century and parkour recover their original importance. Its protagonist is an old acquaintance: Basim, twenty years before what we saw in ‘Valhalla’. Here we will know the origins of him and his initiation as an assassin.

Ubisoft Bordeaux will be the studio of the French company, founded in 2017, in charge of shaping this installment, which in 2023 will take us to Baghdad, in an adventure set in the year 861. It is the time of greatest prosperity of the metropolis East, when it was a world center for the development of science, art, commerce and technology. The game will divide the city into four districts, all of them very different from each other, and we will be allowed to visit from the imperial gardens to industrial zones.

Ubisoft has revealed that it is a more linear and completely story-driven game. As it develops we will see the Alamut, the fortress (still under construction) from which the nascent order of the Hidden operates, precedents of the future Order of the Assassins. ‘Mirage’, in this way, represents a unique opportunity to delve into the first steps of lore of the saga, in one of the first chronological appearances of the Order along with what we saw in ‘Origins’ and ‘Valhalla’.

To carry out his assassinations, Basim will have the ability to slow down time, an ability called Focus, which will allow him to be more precise in his crimes. To plan them better, we will have the inevitable eagle view, with the addition that this time our friendly bird can be shot down by archers, so it will be up to us to decide if we want to locate and eliminate them or risk running out of aerial view. An improved hit detection system in combat and a more agile and faster parkour, with a Baghdad specially designed to run through it, round out some of the mechanics that will arrive with this installment.

Among the characters we have seen is not only Basim himself, but also his mentor, a woman named Roshan. It is her voice that is heard throughout the trailer telling Basim’s story, and fans of quality television will immediately recognize her: is Shohreh Aghdashloo, Emmy winner for Supporting Actress for ‘House of Saddam’.

More very significant names, in this case a future ‘Assassin’s Creed’ set in feudal Japan, where players will be able to live a “ninja fantasy”. It is a game in the saga that delves into the open world RPG genre and is developed by Ubisoft Québec, responsible for some of the most notable recent titles in the series, such as ‘Black Flag’, ‘Origins’ or ‘Odyssey’.

One more game of which no details have been given, a title developed by Ubisoft Montreal and that promises to be “a very different kind of game” than usual in the series. A survival horror, perhaps? What is clear is that its setting is related to witchcraft. Shall we go to the Salem witch chases?

Assassin’s Creed: Codename Jade

Although it is not the first ‘Assassin’s’ for mobile phones, it is the first one that is planned as an open world. It will be set in imperial China, and among its attractions, Ubisoft says that it will allow us to do parkour on the Great Wall of China. It is not the only mobile game in the pipeline: Ubisoft is preparing another game in the franchise that will be released exclusively by Netflix, as part of the growth within the sector that the streaming platform is looking for and of the future projects it has with Ubisoft, such as a new series of real image.

And Ubisoft had one last surprise left: Infinity, a hub to enter the different ‘Assassin’s Creed’. With the aesthetics of the Animus, as if it were a time machine, Ubisoft is exploring the possibility of bringing multiplayer experiences back to the franchise.and Infinity would be the nexus of all this.
