The software of the infotainment systems is at a time of great progress thanks, in large part, to the arrival of Android Automotive. An integrated system in the car itselfindependent of the mobile and that is considered as the natural evolution of Android Auto.

There are those who want to approach this platform, but no trace of google. Mercedes-Benz is an example of this, and they will bet on Faurecia-Aptoide for your vehicles infotainment system. The goal is to adopt a platform based on Android, but without Google.

The Mercedes-Benz group will use Faurecia-Aptoide technology for its infotainment systems. Thus, the independent store Aptoide will be integrated from 2023 in the MBUX multimedia system of the German manufacturer.

Aptoide allows manufacturers to bypass the Google account login, to do it through their own platforms

One of the advantages of implementing this type of solution is that you can have access to the Android application ecosystem. no need to enter a Google account in the vehicle. The same Android Automotive APK system is used, with Aptoide as app store.

According to Faurecia-Aptoide, apps undergo a rigorous validation processto verify that they have been correctly ported from the mobile format to the Android Automotive format, as well as carrying out the relevant security checks for both new installations and updates to apps already installed.

Not only Mercedes-Benz has opted for this solution. Faurecia-Aptoide already has commercial agreements with the Volkswagen group and with BMW, allowing access to the app ecosystem with a manufacturer’s own accountrather than with one from Google.

Beating Google on their home turf

Aptoide and Google do not have a good relationship. The battle between the third-party store and Google goes back, and it is already in 2013 Google removed Aptoide from the Play Store. A year later, Aptoide sued Google before the European Commission alleging anti-competitive practices. A legal battle that still alive in 2018.

Google mark this app as unsafeand even tried to remove it automatically from Android phones. A battle that Aptoide is now trying to win. With the implementation of its app store together with the Faurecia system, cars equipped with Android Automotive will not have to have access to Google’s services framework, depriving the company of what is most relevant to it: user data .

It remains to be seen how the implementation is finally resolved, without forgetting that Waze and Google Maps They are still the most popular apps in Spain for navigation, and that already on Huawei mobile has been the clear example that using Android without Google is not always a good idea.
