an electric drift car to resurrect the wildest Renault

Renault is already warming up for the next Paris Motor Show that will take place from October 17. Or, rather, we should say that he has taken a plug and is already charging his batteries, because he has presented his new R5 Turbo 3Ean electric prototype that is the reinterpretation of the legendary French sports car.

In its clear intention to recover the most iconic models in its history in the transition to electric cars, we already know that Renault will have a new R5 completely zero emissions. Since the announcement, there have been many voices that have called for a sports version and, for now, the French firm is responding to these requests with a prototype that, in its words, marks the continuation of the Renault 5 Turbo and Renault 5 Turbo 2.

Aesthetically, this Renault 5 Turbo 3E adopts a large part of the design language popularized by previous Turbo versions, with widened wheel arches, a wide, very marked C-pillar and a spoiler that, in this case, acquires totally disproportionate dimensions.

But what is really interesting is inside. To get rid of all the prejudices related to the electric car, this R5 Turbo 3E has been designed as a drifter car, that is, to enjoy skidding with it. Their arguments: rear-wheel drive and two electric motors (one per wheel) to generate a power of 280 kW (380 hp) and a torque of 700 Nm.

The result is as expected: 3.5 seconds to reach 100 km/h from a standstill, with a maximum speed limited to 200 km/h. In order to improve its performance, the battery is only 42 kWh, which allows it to save weight and improve its performance in drift competitions or gymkhanas. In fact, the turning angle of the wheels is greater than 50º.

The electric sports car has some of its own identity signs. The large control of the handbrake typical of vehicles dedicated to the drift and the car has been filled with camera mounts (up to twelve) inside and out to record everything that happens outside and the reactions inside.

According to Renault, in the design and development of this R5 Turbo 3E, an eye has also been placed on video games and digital environments. Its extraordinarily exaggerated shapes and decoration are inspired by video games, while the sport compact will also have its own collection of NFT related to the vehicle, although no further details have been given in this regard.

One more stone in an electrical plan that bets on nostalgia

The Renault 5 Turbo 3E invites you to dream with a future launch of a fully electric but sporty compact sports car that collects part of the essence of those R5 Turbo and Turbo 2, one of the brand’s most beloved models. but he’s not the only one nostalgia exercise that the brand is willing to do in its conversion to the electric car.

Since Luca de Meo became CEO of Renault, the firm has been clear that it has to play its most passionate keys to relaunch the firm with the jump to the electric car. The strategy of opting for more passionate models has already been followed by the leader at the helm of Seat with Cupra that already has its own identity and is seen as the true future of Seat.

With the presentation of Renewal in 2021, the strategic plan that the firm has in mind for its next launches and whose main objective is the sale of exclusively electric vehicles in 2030, it was clear that Luca de Meo wanted to focus on the models that have aroused the most sympathy over the years to re-engage an audience that is seeing how the industry is standardized and the models are, every day, more similar to each other. In fact, Renault itself has just experienced it with the launch of the Mitsubishi ASX and its similarities with the Renault Captur.

In this trip to the past, Renault will also rescue the R4L that we will also see at the Paris Motor Show. At the moment, nothing is known about the future electric car that could arrive in an SUV format to compete in a market in which Renault has not yet been released. His Renault Mégane E-Tech stays halfway between the SUV and the compact.

At the moment, rumors suggest that this new electric Renault 4 will be a reinterpretation of the original model and that it will be less tied to the original concept than the future R5 zero emissions. It seems that modern lines will be chosen on the conceptual basis of the classic model, in an exercise similar to what Mini does with each new release.
