Amazon leads the way in indoor de-escalation

Masks are rapidly disappearing from everyday life for Americans. Last week we learned that several states in the North American country had withdrawn the obligation to carry them in public indoor spaces, with exceptions such as public transport or health institutions, and now it is one of the main companies in the country, Amazon (with more than a million workers in the United States), who It has been established that it will not be compulsory for its employees to wear it in the offices or in the warehouses. Yes, if they are vaccinated.

The vaccinated, goodbye to the mask. Amazon has been the first company to withdraw the mandatory use of a mask in its facilities without more conditions than being vaccinated. But there are other examples, in this state case, that invite us to think that we will all follow that path in withdrawing the mandatory nature of this sanitary article.

So France established last week that as of February 28, the indoor mask will no longer be mandatory for all those citizens who have the covid certificate in order, that is, for those who have the complete vaccination schedule. In public transport it will continue to be mandatory to carry it. A different case is that of the Community of Madrid, which in October 2021 allowed that their workers do not use it in work centers as long as they remain seated and 1.5 meters from any person.

End of the mask without conditions. However, other government entities abroad are withdrawing the mandatory use of a mask indoors without differentiating between the vaccinated and the unvaccinated. This is the case of the states of New York, California, Oregon, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware or Massachusetts in the United States and England. in the United Kingdom. However, in all these cases the removal of restrictions only affects public spaces and companies can decide what is done in their facilities.

Amazon has done it before.. It is not the first time that Jeff Bezos’s company withdraws the mandatory use of a mask in its facilities. In November 2021, it did the same when infections by the Delta variant decreased, although just a month later had to reinstate its obligation before the Omicron extension.

The anti-restriction insurgency: protests against pandemic measures are radicalizing

Vaccination mandatory. The step that Amazon has taken increases the pressure against unvaccinated workers even more. Previously, the e-commerce giant had already announced that as of March 18, it will not pay sick leave due to Covid for employees who have not been vaccinated. In addition, reduced the period of isolation by contagion to seven days.

Despite these measures, Amazon is not the company that is most harshly charging against unvaccinated workers. Google already said in December that it would fire employees who have not been vaccinated by the summer of 2022. And the same has been announced by other companies such as JP Morgan or Citigroup. Of course, only in the United States, because in Spain the law protects workers and employers cannot require their staff to show them evidence that they are vaccinated, such as the covid passport, so they have no way of knowing who It is and who is not, as we already explained in Xataka.
