In the month of February, Google launched the first Android 13 Developer Preview, anticipating the expected dates and paving the way for its new operating system. During today, the company is celebrating its Google I/O 2022, Google’s most important software event. The company has taken the opportunity to highlight some of the news that will come to Android 13, as well as some relevant changes that come to the platform.

Android 13 and the big change in design language

Android 13 has a great protagonist: Material You. This is the design language that follows the path of Material Design, and it comes mainly to allow new color palettes based on our wallpaper. This color palette is not only applied to the launcher icons, but to the accent color of the entire system: notification bar, menus, native applications, etc. Of course, it will be necessary for the manufacturer to want to implement and work under this design line, and the depth of the new design in the system will depend on the customization layer.

In the same way, It will have important improvements in terms of security and privacy, with the biggest change in the permissions system in Android history, now being able to control sensitive permissions in a couple of clicks and without even going into settings. New permissions are also introduced, such as the ‘Music and other audio files’ permission, ‘Photos and videos’ permission, ‘Nearby devices’ and the ‘Files and documents’ permission. The purpose is that we can have even more control over our deviceand keep app behavior in check.

‘Photo Picker’ is another of the star features of Android 13 that Google wanted to highlight at its I/O. It is an option that allows share the photos we want in the Google Photos app, without giving access to the entire album. Thus, the app can only have information about the photos that we have selected.

They also arrive with Android 13 the different languages for apps. You can choose, app by app, the language they will have. This could only be done via the app’s own settings, if the app allowed it, but it will now be a native system feature. They also want to promote RCS messaging, working with operators to turn ‘Google Messages’ into something more similar to ‘iMessage’. All end-to-end encryption, file transfers without quality loss, and a conversation experience more worthy of a chat app than a simple SMS app.
