A rock got stuck in one of Perseverance’s wheels (and it’s been there for weeks)

NASA’s Perseverance rover, whose mission is to find evidence to find out if there was ever life on Mars, has hit a bump in the road.

as collected CNET, a small rock has become lodged in one of the rover’s six wheels space of the US agency valued at 2,000 million euros.

A rock that doesn’t want to leave

The intrusive rock was discovered last February 25 thanks to a photograph captured by one of Perseverance’s hazard detection cameras, known as Hazcams. However, she is believed to have been on the wheel since early February.

Since landing on Mars, Perseverance has traveled just over three kilometers over Jezero Crater, where it has taken various samples of Martian soil. Everything seems to indicate that the rover would have hit the intruding rock in one of its tasks.

An image this month shows that the rock was still stuck in the front wheel of the Rover. However, this hasn’t stopped Perseverance from returning to where he initially landed to continue collecting soil samples.

At the moment the incident does not seem to represent a problem for the mission of NASA on Mars, which has published the image of the rock in the wheel of Perseverance in its public voting contest “picture of the Week”, which has come out the winner.

The US agency has not revealed whether it will take any action to get rid of the rock – if that is possible – or simply the rover will continue with its tasks as long as the incident does not represent a real danger to the mission.

Perseverance’s wheels were inspired by those of Curiosity

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory used all its experience in developing the wheels for Curiosity, the rover launched in 2011, to design Perseverance’s wheels, which are each 52.6 centimeters in diameter.

The wheels they are made of aluminum and feature titanium spokes. They also feature new treads: instead of Curiosity’s 24-pattern treads, there are 48 gently curved treads and thicker covers.

The Perseverance mission is part of a broader NASA program, of which the Artemis program is a part, that includes missions to the Moon as a way to prepare for future human exploration of Mars.
